Learning about Quality Improvement with the IHI Open School

HMC's agreement with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) marks a long-standing arrangement to collaborate on building a learning community across HMC through skilled multi-disciplinary care teams.

The IHI is helping HMC to develop an understanding of how proven improvement practices can work across the organization to generate more examples of successful implementations that can then be shared across the organization.

As part of this agreement, HMC has secured the rights for all HMC staff to take IHI’s Open School (OS) courses free of charge. (Course access is usually $300 per registration).

The IHI Open School was launched in September 2008, providing students of medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, health administration, dentistry and other allied health professions with the opportunity to learn about quality improvement and patient safety.

The Department of Medical Education encourages all physicians and residents to complete the online modules. The courses give staff the opportunity to increase their understanding of healthcare quality improvement and patient safety and to incorporate their learnings into their daily work.

To assist in the integration of quality improvement and patient safety into clinical practice and to meet ACGME International LLC accreditation requirements, HMC encourages residents and fellows to complete the courses listed below as part of their training requirements.

Residents and fellows will receive a certificate upon course completion and will be prepared to engage in quality improvement and patient safety projects within their programs and departments. More information about the courses is available in the Course Catalogue.

Plans are underway to develop a local IHI OS Chapter or “Majlis” for HMC staff. Physicians and residents will be able to register their interest in joining this Majlis when fully established with the Medical Education Department.

While the IHI OS offers a certificate of completion to HMC healthcare workers who complete their online courses, HMC offers CPD credits to physicians completing the courses as part of their self-learning endeavor.
